Me Smart - Understanding Beauty Ingredients
Ever
wonder what some of those ingredients do that you see again and
again in beauty products? Here's a short list of common beauty
ingredients in moisturizers and what they achieve.
- Glycerin
and Sorbitol.
Humectants that attract water to the skin, so they make great
all-purpose moisturizers.
- Petrolatum
and Lanolin. Two heavier emollients that act as water-sealers
and barriers. They both keep the moisture in your skin from
evaporating into the air.
- Lanolin.
Is a purified fat, can be irritating to some skin.
- Alpha-Hydroxy
Acids and Lactic Acids. Both attract moisture to the skin
and dissolve and sweep away dead, dry skin from the topmost
layer so skin looks fresher, smoother and cleaner. Naturally
found in fruits, sugar cane, wine and milk
- Collagen
and Elastin. Both attract moisture to the skin. Derived
from protein, both also exist naturally in the skin and provide
skin with elasticity, firmness and strength. As we age, the
fibers weaken, then get tangled and harden, causing the skin
to feel looser and less firm as a result. Losing its smooth
layer of support, skin also begins to wrinkle.
- Hyaluronic
Acid and Urea. Two natural skin and body components. Hyaluronic
Acid is found in the skin itself and helps keep skin cushiony
and plump. Both attract moisture to the skin.
